There is software for teaching hearing deficient children, and from this there
is only one small step to programs that would be dedicated to acoustic
bio-feedback for foreign language teaching. I have started a project to develop
FLT dedicated software, but had to abandon it due to scarce funding :-( My
ideas are described in:
Gonet, W. (2001) PROTRAIN – An Interactive Visual Feedback Pronunciation
Training System For Foreign Language And Hearing Impaired Learners. In:
Boettinger, K., S. Doenninghaus and R. Marzari (eds). Beitraege der Europaischen
Slavistischen Linguistik (POLYSLAV 4). Muenchen, (Die Welt der Slaven.
Sammelbaende. (With L. Kowalczyk, M. Goworek and A. Trochymiuk).

I have been using acoustic displays (oscillograms, spectrograms, power plots,
both static and real-time) since 1992 for teaching English phonetics to Polish
learners at the university level, and I have been getting good results. My idea,
however, is a little different than yours, as I use this as assistance to
explanation, rather than in place of explanation.
My experience in this field with regard to teaching 'partial' voicing and
aspiration is described in the publications cited below:
Gonet, W. (2001) Voicing Control in English and Polish: A Pedagogical
perspective. International Journal of English Studies. Murcia (Spain):
Universidad de Murcia, pp. 73-92.
In another paper available software for speech analysis is evaluated:
Gonet, W. (2002) Speech Lab @ Work and @ Home. Speech and Language Technology,
Vol. 6. Poznań: Polish Phonetic Association; pp. 57-80. (with R. Swiecinski).
A more general view on using speech visualisation for teaching FL phonetics is
presented in another article - unfortunately - in Polish:
Gonet, W. (2002) (In Polish) Wizualizacja w domenie czasu jako pomoc w nauczaniu
fonetyki języka obcego. (Speech Visualization in the Time Domain As an Aid in
Teaching Foreign Language Phonetics). Badania naukowe. Edited by. W. Gonet and
H. Kardela. Kielce: WSU.
If you are interested, I can send you reprints.
Best wishes,
Wiktor
