I’m about to publish a new book “Truespel Book One: Analysis of the Sounds
(Phonemes) of USA English” In it I wonder how much static I am going to
get from linguists of the world, because I interpret the phonemes of English
a little differently than present dictionary pronunciation guides. (Which
may be out of date?) Let me know in personal post or on this board what you
think. Please use m-w.com as the pronunciation reference, and not your own
dialect. Click on the icon next to the word at m-w.com to hear them spoken.
Four big pronunciation issues are the tradstreengz (traditional spelling
letter strings) “ing, ink, ang, ank”. My claim is that these have long vowels
not short ones as all dictionaries say. For instance tradwerd
(traditionally spelled word) “win” has a short i, but tradwerdz “wing/wink”
have “long e” vowels, such as in “weep.” As well, tradwerd “ban” has a
short a, but tradwerdz “bang/bank” have long a, as in “bake”. For USA
accent, am I right in this or are all linguists presently opposed? If there
is no response, I think it’s fair to assume opposition.
Another issue is the spelling out of all schwas. A bit tricky because those
vowels are unstressed and are barely heard at all. Most dictionaries when
spelling out schwa use ‘short u” as in “up,run”, but I find that “short i”
as in “it,is” is more accurate. To this end many suffixes such as
“ed,en,es,tion” are now given the vowel “i” (id,in,is,shin) in truespel to
represent USA speech.
Truespel is a strictly phonetic spelling that uses letters in normal case to
represent the 40 USA speech sounds with stress also shown. It would be
intereseting to know your take on these issues above to show how far I am
from the mainstream.
Let me know what you think.
