A search in the electronic version of the UCLA Phonological Segment Inventory
Database (Maddieson & Precoda, 1992) for languages with vowels that have the
properties "high mid", "central", and "unrounded" yielded 22 languages. They
are: Bulgarian, Kashmiri, Nanai, Brao, Nicobarese, Khmu?, Pacoh, Thai, Lahu,
Phlong, Moro, Dan, Diola, Kohumono, Ewondo, Bete, Ndut, Kaingang, Jebero,
Bakairi, Cacua, and Trumai. The symbol used in UPSID to transcribe this vowel
isn't reversed "e" but schwa. On the other hand, UPSID is careful where
possible to distinguish between "mid" and "high mid" and these are all cases
which are explicitly described as the latter. One could of course dispute
particular analyses, e.g. I think the Thai vowel is back unrounded rather than
central, but nonetheless there seem to be a fair number of contenders.
