Nicely put - well designed even :)
Rang bells with a recent debate on nature of knowledge in context of
information siystems design
- on the one hand shaped by the selection, development and sturcturing of
information as basis for decision making
- on the other hand shaped by the role of diverse aims rewards and
interpretive contexts of diverse stakeholders when choosing which decision
to put into action
So i suppose i am somewhere between BOTTOM UP as an ideal and TOP DOWN.
Structuration theory is interesting on that one thouthg again in information
systems(Wanda Orlikowski)

Tevfik,
this etymological approach rather remindes me of the failures of
de-sign when the _creator_ takes his role a bit too important.

Rousseau is describing Art and a TOP-DOWN approach.
Design should be based on "Need" - which i see as a BOTTOM-UP approach,
developing the form out of the "content":
Although it is desirable that the "whole" is more than just the sum of
its parts, the idea should be to develop the shape / form (Gestalt) out
of the nucleus of the need.
IMHO,
