Mike,
I don't have a particular text to suggest, but can suggest a possible
solution. When I was in graduate school at the University of Arizona, I helped teach
illustration classes. One project we did was providing illustrations, in a
competitive setting (i.e., the client picked the winner(s)). The articles/texts
were for the university alumni magazine and varied from scientific articles to
special interests articles. If you have access to something similar, it would
possibly provide access to sources for you problem.
When you said the article should not have any biases in terms of appealing to
particular groups or genders, do you mean within the class of students? If
so, the above suggested solution might be the best option.
I would suggest that overcoming biases to come up with a compelling solution
is the mark of creative designers and illustrators.
