Dear colleagues - Can I pick your brains, please? We are planning
(possibly) to do a retrospective audit of a sample of medical
certificates in order to assess how good the internal systems are for
picking up disease reportable under RIDDOR. We have around 7,000
employees, a belief that sickness absence rates are low, and currently
no screening of medical certificates by the OHS. Does anybody have a
feel for the prevalence of work-related ill-health diagnoses in medical
certificates in the general population, or in other university staff, or
in other large organisations? This prevalence data would be important
information in deciding sample size - ie how many certificates to
screen.
Also - does anyone have any data on the person-hours needed for
screening medical certificates? This would also be very helpful in
identifying the resources needed for this study.
Best wishes - Kate
