Hi Gordy/Gill,
The answer to your question is that it is possible to undertake
audiometric screening without a hearing booth as long as the required
levels of ambient noise outlined in the HSE publication MS26 "A guide to
audiometric testing programmes" are met.
Even with a booth it can be quite a challenge to meet the levels in a
manufacturing environment, such as you describe. Without a booth use of
noise excluding headphones would be essential.
I would get some noise measurements done and get a copy of MS26 to
compare these to the legislation. If it is not possible to achieve the
required levels, even by doing the testing in the quietest part of the
foundry, then the company will have to purchase a booth, or send people
off site for testing.
I hope that this helps.
With best wishes,
Stu.

Subject: ENVIRONMENT FOR AUDIO SCREENING
Hi,
maybe a thorny issue, but here goes.
My partner (who will be sharing my log on) has to perform audio
screening
in a foundary setting withno hearing booth. Despite internet searches
we
can not find a standard for the screening environment.
We both feel that the use of an audio booth is pre-requisite to accurate
audiometry, but what happens in situations where no booth is available?
Should it be viewed as reasonable to ask a company to purchase a audio
booth?
Many thanks
Gordy/ Gill
