Seems like a rather narrow definition of health promotion to me. Try www.hda.org.uk, www.hebs.org.uk, http://www.ldb.org/vl/top/lit-work.htm, and of course www.who.org for references to workplace health promotion policy and research.

The terminology is interesting. I wouldn't have called manual handling training a health promotion because it is firmly a workplace issue, covered by H&S regulations, and an employer doesn't/shouldn't have any choice about whether the training is offered. I would have limited the term health promotion to lifestyle issues, such as smoking, diet, exercise and alcohol, which are covered in general practice, with incentive payments, and by funded health promotion units within the NHS public health function. There is no obligation on an employer to do this, but many do, often with a lot of resource put in to health screening, sometimes for rather dubious reasons. See the website of the National Electronic Library for Health http://www.nelh.nhs.uk/screening/ for further information on screening - Kate

Louise,
One of the best examples I can think of where an intervention and promotion
campaign saved money is that of Wigan and Leigh's manual handling programme.
I was given details by Carol BANNISTER at the RCN but Carol may be able to
refer you to someone involved in the campaign.
Best wishes
Kevin

Subject: Health Promotion
Dear List,
Continuing on from Penny's original quesion about health promotion and it's
cost effectiveness, I am a first year student currently writing my research
proposal looking at the benefits of implementing health promotion programmes
in the workplace. For my literature review I have found lots of articles in
American journals and books written on the subject but I have not yet come
accross any evidence. Are any of you aware of any research that has been
carried out in this country, if so please can you let me know where I might
find the research articles.
You can e-mail me direct with any such literature on
