Dear Diane,
How did the company arrive at it's protocol. What standards of fitness
to drive lift trucks does the company use?
I have only found the DVLA standards for fitness to drive although I
have seen a reference to a HSE publication HSG(6) - I've not seen this
document. The link below may be of limited help too
http://www.ttt-services.co.uk/medic_stand.htm
One company I did some fork lift medicals for, a failure of the
stereopsis test on the keystone triggered a referral to an optician for
a thorough assessment. From experience, a significant proportion of
people failed the keystone test (stereopsis) but had a satisfactory
optician test without requiring any correction - I cannot recall anyone
being 'unfit' for lift trucks through poor depth perception. I have
known a lift truck driver with monocular vision with a perfect safety
record.
It would be interesting to hear other comments about this.
