Dear Glenn,
We still require GP or specialist reports for prospective employees
with evidence of significant underlying health problems, including
mental health.
We are not involved in the pre-employment screening of nurses entering
training but do screen staff who work with babies and children <16
years.
I have attached a standard screening form which the GP is requested to
complete. For those who have not been registered with their GP for >1
year or do not have access, a competent OH Physician may undertake
the
mental health assessment.
I have also attached a document about mental health issues in the NHS
in case you have not seen it before. There are clear guidelines in
regard to pre-employment screening and medical reports.
If the information you receive from a GP is not satisfactory, you may
have to look at the questions you are asking (and also the fee you are
being charged) - you may have cause for complaint if you are being
charged for a report that does not answer your questions. The BMA
have
issued guidance for reasonable fees for medical reports although I do
not have an electronic copy.
I hope this helps,
Regards
Paul D'Arcy,
