I have just spoken to Dr Chris Conlon, consultant in infectious diseases
regarding this matter and he says that there is no need for visual
screening for those on long term maintenance doses. Screening is only
required for those who are taking high doses of chloroquine for
inflammatory diseases.

Hi folks
Just having a thought about travellers on long term Chloraquine.
The College of Opthamologists offers advice on long term use of this drug
with regards eyesight (obviously!).
The advice is primarily for people on it long term as suppressant to
rheumatic disease as opposed gold injections/immunosuppressants.
It states that ocular toxicity is not likely to happen in doses of less than
4mg/kg on a daily basis (bearing in mind that Chloraquine for travellers is
taken weekly)
My thoughts on the matter is that it is not a real issue for travellers,
however I feel that annual/bi-annual eye tests by our optician would be a
reasonable action to take.
Anyone else have any thoughts or experiences on this, or any other travel
issue, they would like to share?
Regards
Craig
