Kathy, I'll have a stab at answering your question:
Legislation that may impose a need for surveillance:
The Management of H&S at Work Regs 1999 sets a out a general requirement for
surveillance if Risk Assessments dictate
Hazards where Regulations Might Apply to Specific Exposures:
* COSHH - e.g Wood dust, Lead, Isocyanates, PCBs, Oils
* Asbestos
* Lead
* Compressed air
* Ionising Radiation
* Diving
* Noise
* Hand Arm Vibration (draft?)
Issues Where there is no specific legislative requirement for Surveillance:
Stress
Manual handling
WRULD
Whole body Vibration
Best Practice Points:
* Surveillance can range from self report, skin inspections, hearing
test to medical examinations only do what makes a positive contribution to
ensuring adequate control of exposures
* Surveillance should be carried out by a competent person, which can
be the exposed person if adequately trained
* Have a clear defined strategy for acting on surveillance results
* Keep good records
* Act on results
* Monitor and Review
* Aim to remove the need for surveillance i.e. get rid of the hazard.
I don't think you can go wrong if you use this HSE Leaflet
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg304.pdf
<http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg304.pdf> as a starting point for best
practice, which as you will see is where I got my info from. You'll also
probably want a copy of HSG 61 (1999) Health Surveillance at Work
(referenced in the leaflet).

Subject: Health Surveillance
Hi again everyone,
Well after the very nice Sarah sabotaged my previous request
( only joking
Sarah) I thought I would try again as I had only 1 response
back to my
request.
I am have been tasked with putting together a list of all
Statutory Health
Surveillance that could be required by companies, and also
health
surveillance that would come in under Best Practice.
Does anyone have such a list or know of one? I will accept
lists that you
have for your own organisations for I can soon compile a
master from that.
All and any help is appreciated,
Thanks
