My understanding of this is that Nurses do not prescribe in OH.
I think the reference is Prescription only medicines (human Use) order (1997),
shedule 5 parts II relates to supply, and part III relates to administering
POMS in the course of an OH scheme. These schedules required "clearly defined
circumstances" to be used.
However if you work in the NHS, patient group directions apply [POM (human use)
order amended 2000]
The NMC guidelines recommend that medicines are given under patient group
directions, so we use the format of PGD's to create our "clearly defined
circumstances" as we are not NHS.
Hope this helps
Margaret

There is a statutory instrument under the Medicines Act from around 1984
that allows those providing an "occupational health scheme" may
prescribe/supply medicines as determined by group protocols. I am sorry I am
unable to put my hands on the reference to the SI, but those who had the RCN
Guide to Occupational Health Services manual will find details in there.
I spoke to Carol Bannister about this a few years ago and it was being
rewritten but whether it has nor not I dont know ... Carol if you're out
there....!

Hi
As far as I am aware (from what they have told us in the RCN OH degree)
Practice Nurses are still the only ones able to prescribe - there is no
legal cover for OH prescribing outside of a limited "standing order"/group
protocol situation

Please can anyone working in an OH environment tell me if they have been on
a nurse prescribing course. Any details would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Sue
