I have a gentleman who is causing me a few problems. He is an IDDM and his
duties are to drive fork lift trucks in a warehouse environment. He had had
adequate control of his diabetes, with warning signs for hypos which
occured away from work, and no hypos at work. He works a regular shift, the
same each week with the same break times etc. He had had an argument with
his team leader on one shift and suffered a 'hypo' in front of the
supervisors work station, whilst on his truck causing serious damage to the
truck, some racking, but thankfully not to himself or other staff. He
stated he had no warning signs of the hypo and cannot remember what
happened. He was suspended for further medical reprts , and his GP report
states that this was an unusual occurence as he had previousley had warning
signs and his stated carbohydrate intake was sufficient, if not above, that
required to maintain his sugar levels.
His employers have a long history with absence with him due to alcohol eyc,
and I amunsure what to do next. His GP has advised that he is OK for his
duties but that he checks his BMs regularly, as he was doing before. I am
inclined to advise that he should refrain from Truck work, as his 'hypo'
was unexplained and had no warning signs. He can be redepoloyed for a short
period of time.
I would value any opinions on this as. Many thanks.
