Dear Alan and others,
Without making this a semantic discussion (he says before going on to make
it a semantic discussion), I would not dispute that this important advisory
role contributes to the management process. Alan's last point is also
clearly within the conventional use of the word management.
I wonder, however, whether using the word management implicates the OHA as
part of the organisational management. Apart from raising questions among
the work-force about impartiality and what aims are being pursued, more
fundamentally how do OHAs feel about that being a manager (a word that
usually - though not necessarily - conveys a particular power relationship)
rather than a adviser/practitioner (preferably a reflective one at that)?
Speaking as an outsider, the latter role seems to offer greater support to
one's integrity.
Best wishes
Kevin

Subject: Do OHAs manage?
Dear Kevin,
Yes. I think many of us do see ourselves as having an important management
role.
We advise employers on how they can effectively manage hazardous work
activities to prevent health problems arising.
We advise employers on how they can effectively manage/ support employees
with health problems.
We advise employees with health problems on how they can effectively manage
them to succeed at work.
We advise employees on how to manage their work to avoid health problems
We manage provision of OH support services

What is this pre-occupation with managing everything? Is that how OHAs see
themselves?

Dear everyone,
I have read and reread the article in the 2003 March OH Journal "Managing
incapacity" and would welcome some advice. I thought I understood the
concept
of PHI, but in this article it is called "permanent health insurance" on one
page and "private health insurance" on the other but I an obviously very
limited in my understanding. I confess to thinking it was private health
insurance such as BUPA,PPP,WPA etc, but the article is talking about
something
else that I am not sure I fully understand.
Please can someone enlighten me or point me towards a good information
source
so that I can improve my knowledge and understanding
Best Wishes
Margaret Mercer
