This is why it is important for employers to have watertight procedures for
absence reporting. Then it's like 'no claim not no blame' insurance - ie
the employee has to adhere to the procedures or sickpay is withheld. The
procedures can still make allowances for people who are admitted to hospital
as an emergency & unable to self-certificate or who fall ill whilst on
holiday. Most insurers require proof of visiting a Dr abroad for their
travel insurance as well.
That way OH don't have to get into discussions about 'validating' an
illness, which as we know is what all employers would like us to do.
