We use an EAP company called CiC for several of our clients. They have a
very robust referral system and referrals are made directly to the EAP
following a self referral or to the occupational health nurse.
Employees can also access the service directly by phone using a help line,
which can lead to an offer of 121 counselling.
From my understanding they are happy to negotiate with a customer [the
employer] how many counselling sessions the employee should receive, the
norm is often a maximum of 6.

I work in a law firm which provides health insurance for employees.
Currently, under our scheme, in order to have counselling employees need to
be referred by a GP to a psychiatrist for assessment who then either
continues treatment (CBT) or refers to a therapist.
I am looking at a proposal to our insurers so that I can refer directly for
af ixed number of sessions when an employee presents with work related or
impacting stress. Does anyone else have experience of implementing this? if
so, what criteria do you use? who do you refer to?
Does anyone know of any research on number of sessions usually required,
frequency of treatment, comparison of psychiatristl ed care vs.
therapist/counsellor in stress cases. etc. Overall cost/benefit will
obviously be an important consideration
