I would have thought that from a legislative perspective an ambulance comes
under an ordinary license. Therefore they have at all times to be able to
pass the number plate test.
From an occupational perspective I would suspect many employers apply the
group 2 standard (we would if we did them, and we apply the group 2 standard
for other similar drivers). After 45yrs they will have to meet the higher
group 2 standard at each 5 yearly renewal, up until 65yrs when it becomes
yearly. We apply this standard to employees who drive vehicles that require
an ODL but from an occupational perspective they are vocational drivers/taxi
drivers in effect.

Subject: Ambulance driver vision testing
Does anyone have information on the ages/frequencies for emergency service
driver vision testing ? eg under 40s 5-yearly, over 40s 2-yearly etc. I have
looked at DVLA, HSE and "Med aspects of Fitness to Drive", but can find
nothing specific in this regard.Specifically I require ambulance info, but
other service guidelines will be useful.
Thanks,
Richard Powell
