I am after some advice please,
I have an employee who works in a production area (operating machinery),
who appears to be an alcoholic.
I was asked to see him about an unrelated health problem, but upon
questioning found that he had been drinking before coming to work.
Generally he drinks at lunchtime, but as he has an enlarged liver I am
concerned that he may still have alcohol in his blood steam some hours
later.
As he admitted to drinking on his way to work that evening I sent him home
and contacted our OH Dr the next day. They advised me to arrange for them
to see him, but in the meantime if he agreed not to drink prior to work
then allow him to carry on.
The problem I have is that I think he is still drinking, but I have no
proof. I am thinking of obtaining a breathalyser so that I can check to
see if he is under the influence of alcohol when he comes into work.
Does anyone have any advice?
Are breathalysers reliable indicators of alcohol in the bloodstream?
The employee has not given me consent to inform his Manager.
We have no substance abuse policy currently, and it could take some time
(red tape) !!
Many thanks
Samantha Davies
