Two Curatorial Positions for Time-Based Arts with Technology
EMPAC, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center, is one of the major
initiatives of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. With this project
Rensselaer declares the necessity of creating new grounds for culture and society in
conjunction with research, technology and education. EMPAC will provide a platform
where the vectors of research can meet the circles of reflection and artistic creation.
Technology is to be challenged as art and perception are challenged and changed
by technology.
The new building for EMPAC will open towards the end of 2006. The building will
house a concert hall (1200 seats), a theater with fly-tower (400 seats), two studios/
black boxes (3500 sqft/325 sqm and 40’/12m high - 2500 sqft/232 sqm and 28’/
8.5m high), four studios for artists-in-residence, a rehearsal studio plus audio and
video production suites. The activities of EMPAC will start this year and ramp up to
the opening.
EMPAC is serving the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Capital Region of New
York State in its vicinity to the Berkshires, and the national and international arts
community. EMPAC is not part of a Rensselaer school and has no teaching
obligations. EMPAC will collaborate in research activities of the Institute, integrate
students, faculty, and staff in interdisciplinary projects, support artistic productions
and extended artists-in-residencies, and provide a culturally diverse and provocative
program.
