Dear list members,
I am a PhD student with the Cranfield Disaster Management Centre. I am
however based at and funded by the European Commission's Joint Research
Centre in Italy.
The objective of my PhD thesis is improve the appropriateness of
international responses after a sudden onset natural disaster strikes in a
developing country. I aim to achieve this through providing quicker and
better estimates for the type and amount of aid that is needed from outside
the disaster zone.
I have chosen to use earthquake as archetype of sudden onset natural
disasters in general. In addition, I have decided to limit the initial
study to the seismically active region in eastern central asia (being
Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan).
So far I have located data on the seismic attributes for the historical
earthquakes in the region.
What I lack is data on:
1. The resulting damage (or indicators for the damage) on buildings,
infrastructure, lifelines, human life etc.
2. The type and amount international aid that was provided at each occasion.
(Finanical, equipment, expertise, supplies etc)
3. The level of satisfaction or adequacy for the local and international
aid.
My question to you all is: Do you know where I could find such data?
I currently have the EM-DAT data of the CRED and some data from USGS.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Best Regards,
Daniel Eriksson
