I would like to draw to your attention the establishment and operation of
"Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies (A-DES)" in the faculty of science
at Brandon University, Brandon, Manitoba.
The Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies program at Brandon University
adopts a liberal arts and sciences approach to foster an appreciation for
the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Students are introduced to the
broad range of technological, cultural and environmental risks and
disasters.
The program consists of 120 credit hours of instruction, leading either to:
The degree of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Applied Disaster and Emergency
Studies: Disaster Science Concentration or
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies: Planning
and Management Concentration.
The program will normally be completed in four academic years.
The program is intended to address the strategic need for well-qualified
people working in this field through a novel, highly interactive,
problem-solving curriculum. The Disaster Science Concentration will provide
students with a solid theoretical and applied foundation in the natural
sciences, emphasizing elements of modern society and the environment as it
pertains to risks, disaster and emergency processes and responses.
The Planning and Management Concentration will focus on mitigation,
organizational, and resource planning and management.
This program is available in distance education as well.
