Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship using a pulse length and wavelength tunable picosecond laser system for the development of
a new research analytical instrument.
The position is in the Molecular Physics Laboratory (MPL) of SRI International under the supervision of Dr. Harald Oser.
The work is part of a NSF Analytical Chemistry program to develop a new major research facility based on a picosecond laser ionization mass
spectrometer for the detection of a wide variety of compounds at trace levels. The initial task is to automate and integrate the new laser system
into a existing Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer unit. With this new system we intend to explore nitrocompounds, organic molecules containing
halogen, metal, and heavy atoms, and larger biomolecules.
We expect the candidate to have experience in the operation and maintenance of wavelength tunable picosecond laser systems. Good
programming skills in LabView are highly desired. Experience in resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) and Time-Of-Flight mass
spectrometry (TOFMS) is a plus but not required. Other important qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in chemistry or physics, good oral and
written presentation skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a group. Appointment is for a minimum of one year, with a
second year normally being available upon mutual agreement.
SRI International is a nonprofit contract research organization, located in Menlo Park, California, in the San Francisco Bay region, and is one of
the largest such establishments in the world. Many areas of research are represented by the investigations carried out at SRI, including
chemistry, physics, engineering, life sciences, computer sciences, education, and a variety of other disciplines. MPL has an international
reputation for creative and innovative research in laser spectroscopy, atmospheric studies, and combustion research.
SRI International is an equal opportunity employer and affirmatively seeks diversity in its workforce. SRI recruits qualified applicants and advances
in employment its employees without regard to race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, cancer-related
