Thanks very much for the thoughtful responses re: galena prospecting. Is there any information out there re: stone walls that might have been used to stabilize prospecting pits, and how the appearance/structure of a prospecting pit might have changed during its transition to a trial, and later to a shaft or drift? I'm trying to fashion a somewhat skeletal model for the evolution of a lead mine that might help interpret the features we see (and possibly excavate) on the Dubuque area landscape.
