Hallo,
I am wondering how to determine who mined a particular spot in Alfreton
given that all i know is that it existed according to a map of the area
of the time which points to a disused mine and a nearby air shaft. I
assume it was coal that was being mined, but even that is not certain as
nearby finds have suggested that in medieval times iron ore was being dug
and processed. The map i have is dated ca 1818 and even then it was
disused, suggesting it had been mined but abandoned, considering the
topology and the history of the area, possibly due to water. I suspect it
may have been one of Outrams mines, do any maps of mines exist prior to
the 1800's ? the area i'm interestd in is 440707,355128, to the left of
derby road and the bit where the a38 roundabout is now. It could be that
the name 'Hockley' as in 'Hockley' pit has something to do with it as the
area was known as Hockley, but i cannot find any reference to 'Hockley
pit' or similar except of the Hockley Hall co, which is too far away to
be correct, or ?
Any help or guidence would be appreciated, thanks.
