It would be interesting to know what was contributed by the W.Cumberland and
Barrow Iron Works. Sulphur would have been produced as a by product from most
if not all Iron Smelters for a very long while I would imagine - let alone
Copper & Lead smelters (a nice sideline that was free).
I went round the Workington Steelworks in the late 70's, and remember the
acid plant and vats of acid - a most unpleasant part of the works! - and I
doubt whether todays Regs. would permit those conditions now.
