Hi Adrian,
>Yes Mike Gill I have Yorkshire blood I am afraid!!
It just goes to show that we are letting anyone in nowadays.
I too have seen it spelt as Wharncliffe Woodmore, but Barry's Wharncliffe
Woodmoor is more usual.
Cannot help with websites, but the following references may be of help:-
Companies registered
1873 Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd PRO BT31/1902/7699
1883 Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd PRO BT31/42892/17948
My 'List of Mines' data, which is incomplete, show:-
1880-1896 Wharncliffe Woodmoor Coal Co. Ltd (NB this disagrees with the
BT31 name, which is most probably the correct one).
1908-1946 Wharncliffe Woodmoor Colliery Co. Ltd
1880-1924 The mine was called Wharncliffe Woodmoor
1925-1965 One group of shafts, or mine, was called Wharncliffe Woodmoor
Nos.1, 2 & 3 (closed by the NCB in or around 1965).
1925-1969 One group of shafts, or mine, was called Wharncliffe Woodmoor
Nos.4 & 5 (closed by the NCB in or around 1969).
1971-1978 Wharncliffe Woodmoor No.3 was used as a pumping pit.
An explosion on August 6th 1936 - 58 killed in Lidgett Seam.
Regards,
Mike
