In many cases the small coal was left underground, only the 'round' coal was
sent to bank.
The owners reckoned they could not make a profit on the slack so if it was
left stowed in old workings they paid no royalty as it never came to bank.
Likewise the hewers also never got paid for it.
On re opening some of these old pits in the 20'th cent the new owners have
had a field day when they came across these old bords filled with slack,
especialy if they were providing boiler coal.
