I've had a request, from an A level archaeology student in Plymouth, for
information on lead/silver mines near Ivybridge in Devon. The mines are
those at Filham (best known as Ivybridge Consols) and Caton. In particular,
information is requested on surface layout, the availability of plans and
employment records.
I've point the student to the standard works - A K Hamilton Jenkin, Mines of
Devon: Volume 1, the Southern Area, (London, 1974), and Dines, H. G., The
Metalliferous Mining Region of South-West England, 2 vols., (2nd edn.,
London, 1969, addenda and corrigenda, 1988) - and the abandonment plans in
the Devon Record Office.
Has any member any specific information on the mines which might help?
Peter
