A few days ago Paul Stephens was asking if there are any mining
museums in Japan.
Two that I know of are:
(1) At the Sumitomo Metal Mining Company's former Besshi copper
mine, near Niihama City on the northwest coast of Shikoko Island,
which has displays describing the mine and the history of the
Sumitomo Group (see Mining Magazine, November 1984, p443); and
(2) The Ashio copper mine museum, owned by the Furukawa Co Ltd,
near that company's copper smelter in the Nikko National Park,
inland to the northwest of Tokyo (Mining Mag, Nov1984, p449).
I am sure there would be others, but these are the only two I visited
during my trip in 1984.
You may get more information by writing to Sunao Murata,
41-22 Kaminokidai, Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama, 221-0011, Japan.
He sends me a periodical newsletter which, sadly, is wholly in
Japanese, but is, I feel sure, all about mining history -- there is, for
example, a reference in the latest issue to something by Roger Burt
