Two possibilities here Michael. One, there was a thriving marble extraction industry here in the 19th century, for fireplaces, graves and flooring. Two, fish smoking houses were often located at the foot of cliffs, with fair-sized timber buildings and jetties. Send me a scan offline at [log in to unmask] and I'll see if I can deduce more.

> I acquired a b & w photo this a.m. of some sort of industry on a cliff with half a dozen huts, substantial areas with apparently temporary roofs, a number of small boats, a jetty, a few onlookers and lots of timber scaffolds, props and struts etc. On the back is written what looks like 'stages and flakes near Torbay' if anyone is interested in the area I will send them a scan off-list, I would like to know more myself anyway.
