If it's not, it could be quarrying at either Petit Tor or Long Quarry just
north of Anstey's Cove in the Babbacombe area - the 1896 maps mark fairly
extensive disused quarries in that area. The topography of the raised
planation surface in the background's about right as well, although that
needs more study. The Petit Tor option looks about right from the map and
the point in the background would then be Long Quarry point.
My alternative is another Petit Tor, near Daddyhole where there are more
quarries. Could the bit of land in the background be Berry Head? And more
importantly, Sandy, my wife, thinks it is Berry Head, so I'm saying
nuttin'!!! But if it is, there's no breakwater and one's shown on the 1862 map.
Peter, do you mean the Sharkham Point Iron Mine? If so in the background of
the photo Mike's sent me is a bit wrong, with no bits of land in the right
sort of location, unless they've reversed the photo in printing and we're
looking at Berry Head from the other side
