Robert raised an interesting question on the logic behind the number of
spokes used in a water wheel. I have been intrigued as to why some cast
iron wheels have an odd number of spokes? For example; Splashy Mill in
the Moddershall Valley in Staffordshire has 7 spokes per side. This must
have been more difficult to manufacture than an even number! Were the
millwrights just showing off their skill, or was there a more sensible
reason?
