Roger - I think in short, yes, although I have absolutely no knowledge of what a 'Gaping Ghyll type winch' is like.
The mobile apparatus had to be able to lift a heavy steel 'skip' or bucket carrying possibly two men plus the length of rope. It was provided with a signalling system and a telephone. We had to connect the normal shaft telephone system to the mobile winder and unfortunately the mobile winder telephone was not compatible inasmuch as it was not an 'intrinsically safe' telephone so we had to replace it with one that was.
If the machine that I am referring, or more probably its replacement, is at Ellington, then a much better description may be forthcoming. I am relying on my memory from about forty years ago.
