I remember encountering potato stones when I lived in Compton Bishop, which is in the Mendips, close to Cheddar. They would be occasionally found after ploughing or digging in the garden. The did look like potatoes as well! A local farmer helped me to break into one I found, the outside was incredibly hard rock. Inside a pleasing crystal formation. He had quite a collection, but I never saw, nor heard of amethyst being found.
I know, I'm incredibly quiet on this list, but I very rarely have anything useful to say!
My interests lie in the history of mining, particularly in the iron mines and anthracite mines of NE PEnnsylvania which is where I now live.
