The Hemerdon Wolfram Mine in South Devon was using a ropeway in 1939. I
don't know when it was discontinued and demolished. It made a continuous
squealing & rumbling noise -- almost as annoying as a tin dredge .
About 10 years ago I saw from the road a ropeway operating at a gold
mine in the South of France.
Cableways -- in which wheels travel on a fixed locked coil rope -- have
been often used in concrete or masonry dam construction in narrow
valleys throughout the world. At Claerwen in mid Wales cableways with
traveling tail anchors were supplied by Henderson who also sold derrick
cranes. A form of cableway is used at slate quarries in Pennsylvania.
