Dear Tony,
I believe Ropeways Ltd had taken over Bullivant's? The latter co. had
constructed some amazing systems, one being a mile span between two
mountains! - and in very inhospitable terrain (the feat of tensioning up must
have been a task in itself).
This form of transport was not exclusive to mining, quarrying and
construction of course, as they were used extensively on tea, coffee and
sugarcane plantations - particularly where the terrain was 'adverse'. The
motive power being steam pre 1905.
The Nant-y-moch Reservoir was built using a ropeway! - a good system for dams
actually.
Regards, Bernard.
