Landmark Publishing is shortly to publish The Bristol Coalfield by
John Cornwell. It is the first illustrated history of the former
coalfield. John is an authority on the subject, running Bristol Mining
Archives, offering professional advice on previous mining activity to
solicitors, developers etc. The book contains mainly unpublished
photographs, covering many subjects “ pits, remaining features,
some underground scenes, excavations etc. The book covers the
history of mining since the 1600™s, and includes details of some 40
Newcomen engines; the houses for a few are still standing. Their
existence has been largely unknown to technical historians, and
they do not figure in the standard histories of the engine. Price
