Ken Smith asks about the date of a copy he has of the 21st
edition of the "Directory of Quarries and Pits" published by
Quarry Manager's Journal (QMJ).
QMJ and its present-day successor, Quarry Management,
are the publications of the Institute of Quarrying. The Institute
relocated (in the 1970s?) from its former address in Baker
Street, London, to Nottingham, and is now at:
The Institute of Quarrying, 7 Regent Street, Nottingham, NG1 5BS.

General Manager is Dr. Mike Smith, Secretary Lyn Bryden
When job-hunting in the U.K. in 1967 after my return from iron ore
mining in Sierra Leone (an open pit mine, experience at which entitled
me to join the Institute), I bought a copy of the then current issue
of the Directory (sadly since lost). Quarries and Pits were listed
alphabetically under various category headings, e.g Hard Rock;
Sand and Gravel; etc.
Two entries in the Hard Rock section caught my eye --
Prinknash Abbey ( I forget what kind of rock the monks offered --
is it still listed in your copy, Ken?)
Prisons, H.M., Dartmoor. Granite.
It struck me that, if one went about it in the appropriate way,
you could get a job for life at either establishment.
