Thomas Sopwith, who was agent to WB Lead at the time of the strike (He
actually referred to it as a refusal to enter bargains) left copious
diaries which are still in private hands although the Robinson Library
at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne has a microfilm of them. This
would be a useful source in addition to those mentioned by Peter.
Another would be the local newspaper (Hexham Courant) of the time. My
guess is that you would have to travel to England to see these, but I
could perhaps deal with some direct queries off line.

Subject: Alllenheads Northumberland Mining Strike
I am working on my masters thesis about miners who came from the
Allenheads/Allendale region of Northumberland to the Galena lead
district of Illinois and Wisconsin in 1849. I know there was a lead
miner strike at Allenheads, and I know that my great grandfather and
many others were blacklisted and effectively banished to the United
States. I have the names of all of the people, but I am having a very
difficult time finding any solid information about the strike. I find a
sentence here and a sentence there, usually referring to it while
writing about something else. I am in the United States, so this adds an
extra dimension of difficulty to my research. Does anyone know where I
might find information on this strike?
Thank you.
