Thank you to Helmut & Peter for replying
(That's roughly what I had translated it as)
It does however leave the question why?
I know he went to Germany and had an interest in the language. Clues are
left in his other books, such as descriptions of German Epitaphs in his book
on the subject and in his mining manual he refers to the German names for
some operations as well as the English (e.g. Underhand stoping =
Strossenbau, overhand stoping = Firstenbau) He also wrote a book titled
"Notes on a visit to Saxony" and some of his books have a German quote on
the title page.
I do not know whether he had further mining interests in German.
I can understand him writing a book on the Geology of the Forest of Dean but
I am intrigued as to why it was written in German (presumably it is not just
the title)
Any clues?
Regards
David Hardwick
