Hi Daz and Barry,
I was in the Doncaster area, which was clearly more uncouth than Barnsley
and, from what John Waudby says, particularly the South Notts area. I
wonder if, as lists of mining terms are drawn up, a 'couthness' index will
emerge between the different coalfields.
Hand filling had finished when I began work in 1969, but the phrase under
discussion still survived, even amongst us diallers - who would never dream
of picking up a shovel. In civil engineering, the term was "job and
finish".
Regards,
Mike
