There really is not a good book on Derbyshire coal mining.
However I can make the following suggestions
1. "The Derbyshire Miners" by J.E. Williams. An old-fashioned union
history on the same line as Page Arnot's books. Heavy Duty.
2. "A Pictorial History - National Union of Mineworkers, Derbyshire
Area, 1880-1980" by Cliff Williams. A Picture book of Derbyshire Mining.
Social history.
3. "Mining in the East Midlands, 1550 to 1947" by A.R. Griffin.
Probably the best general history of the East Midlands coalfield, but
orientated mostly towards Nottinghamshire.
4. "Coalmining" by A.R. Griffin. By the same author. A general
history, but tending towards the East Midlands.
5. "Stanton and Staveley: A Business History" by S.D. Chapman.
Stanton and Staveley were Derbyshire's biggest colliery company, and
this book covers their history, but tends to linger on their iron and
steel businesses.
6. "The Coal Mines of Buxton" by Roberts and Leach. History of a
small area of coal on the west side of the county.
7. "Coal Mining around Whaley Bridge" by John Leach. As 6.
As I say, this is not a very good selection. I also suspect that
it is all out of print
Hope this helps
Dave.
