Dear Jane
I am sure you have seen the recent Phan & Crowther article in the BJOG.
The full reference is:
Pham, C. T. and C. A. Crowther (2003). "Birth outcomes: utility values
that postnatal women, midwives and medical staff express." BJOG: an

Subject: Re: Measuring outcomes of midwifery care
It may be of interest to the list to know that a collaborative group has
just submitted a bid to WellBeing in the UK to systematically review the
existing and possible outcome measures used after randomised trials of
intrapartum care. the aims and objectives are as follows.
Aims
To enhance understanding of the health of postnatal women by:
a) Identification of reliable, valid and responsive variables for
the assessment of the postnatal impact of intrapartum intervention
studies
b) Establising the optimum timing for assessment of these
variables during the first postnatal year:
Objectives
1. To audit the range of postnatal outcome measures reported in
randomised controlled trials of interventions in maternity care, and to
establish the timing of assessment of these measures.
2. To locate and summarise studies of the reliability, validity,
responsiveness, and timing of administration of measures identified
under objective 1
3. To locate and summarise studies of the reliability, validity,
responsiveness, and timing of administration of existing measures of
postnatal outcome which are not currently utilised in randomised
controlled trials of interventions in maternity care.
4. To systematically review qualitative studies of mothers views,
experiences, health and well-being during the first postnatal year
Ill let the lists know if we get any where with this - meanwhile, I am
following this thread with interest!
all the best

Dear colleagues,
I am looking at measures that are being used to measure the outcomes of
midwifery care. I have looked at the Optimality index-US, the perinatal
outcome index from the netherlands and the mother-generated index. Has
anyone used these outcome measures, and know of others?
I will collate replies and send a summry to the list
