Methodological Aspects Of On-line Qualitative Research
This is an invitation for papers for one or two sessions to be held at the
RC33 Sixth International Conference on Social Science Methodology,
Amsterdam, August 16-20, 2004.
For information on the conference, see http://www.siswo.uva.nl/rc33.
Abstracts can be sent directly to me [log in to unmask] or to the organization
committee [log in to unmask]
In the last decade many forms of on-line qualitative research have been
developed and applied such as, just to mention some, on-line interviewing,
on-line focus groups, and participant observation in internet communities.
Apart from potential selection bias related to the fact that Internet
access, Internet proficiency and respondent preferences regarding Internet
communication are unequally distributed, methodological implications of
on-line qualitative research have not been extensively discussed.
Papers in this session might focus on issues such as
· Interactional differences between face-to-face interviews, on-line
interviews and email interviews, and their effects on the interview data.
· Different forms of participant observation in discussion lists and
Internet communities, such as open versus hidden participation;
non-participant observation (lurking) versus participant observation, etc.,
and their methodological implications.
· Using Internet panels as sampling frame for theoretical sampling and
analytic induction.
· Mixed methods: combining on-line qualitative and quantitative
approaches with paper, telephone and face-to-face data collection methods.
· Using Internet panels for reliability testing, respondent validation,
and longitudinal research.
· Creating an audit trail of on-line qualitative research.
· Etc.
Research papers reporting studies in which on-line methods are used will be
considered for this session but methodological research papers will be
preferred.
Keywords: qualitative methods; on-line research; Internet panels; mixed
methods
Anticipate a 120 minute session with up to 6 papers
