Dear Colleagues
My name is Nester T. Moyo. I am a nursemidwife working for the International
Confederation of Midwives. I am from Zimbabwe. My interest is in maternal
and child health and women's health in the developing countries. I am very
interested in learning about progress and studies whose results can be
adapted for use in Africa and Asia and also in studies and progress in these
parts of the world. Currently the International Confederation of Midwives is
working on a project on HIV/AIDS. Any new evidence in this field especially
on the issue of prevention of mother-to-child-transmissiion of the virus is
welcome.
Nester Moyo
(I usually sign N.T.)

WELCOME TO THE ICM MIDWIFERY AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH RESEARCH ELECTRONIC
MAILING LIST

This jiscmail list was set up in June 1999 on behalf of the Research
Standing Committee of the International Confederation of Midwives following
the 25th Triennial Congress in Manilla.

The aim is to to create an international network for all people working in
the area of midwifery and reproductive health research, provide an open
electronic discussion forum and information resource. It aims to facilitate
information sharing, (eg workshops, seminars, conferences and new research)
and to promote links, collaborative working, joint problem-solving and
mutual support.

===============
Introduce Yourself to Other List Members
================
As one of the main purposes of this list is to network with each other, we
encourage you on to send a short introduction to the list about your
interests. These will then be saved to an archive on the discussion list web
site.
Please send your introduction to: [log in to unmask]

=====================
Please Join in the Discussion
=====================
Discussion lists are entirely dependent on contributors for their success.
We therefore strongly encourage all participants to use the list if possible
rather than simply being recipients. We would very much welcome comments on
the running of this list, and suggestions for improvements. Send these to
the List Owner as shown below under help for problems & queries.

================================================================

It is a good idea to suspend your mail if you are going to be away

===========
Storing files at Jiscmail
===========

Jiscmail offers the facility for storing files associated with a
particular list, so that users may retrieve them when required.
Anyone wishing to make available reports and other documents that are
of longer term value for retrieval by other members of the list should
mail the List Owner at

[log in to unmask]

with a suitable filename, a short description (300 characters or less
please) and the file itself.

===========================
Commercial Advertising
===========================

Commercial advertising is against the JANET Acceptable Use Policy.
However, publicising items of potential interest to list members, such
as training courses, software etc, can be to the benefit of the list.
If the "publicity" comes from the person likely to make money out of
it, then that falls into a grey area. If you have a message which you
feel may come under this category, then you are advised to first send
the message to me, as list owner

([log in to unmask]).

If the message is suitable, I will forward it to the list on your
behalf.

=========================
List Etiquette
=========================

1. The list is set so that replies to messages are directed to the
the list. This is deliberate. Generally, if responding to a message,
it is best to reply to the list so that all members can benefit.

1. Consider whether replies should go to the whole list or only to
the originator of the message.

2. Always use the "Subject" field in your mail messages.
The benefits are obvious, particularly when browsing through the archives
for a specific message.

3. The lines of your messages should be no longer than about 70
characters long. This makes for easy on-line reading.

4. Remember that the person you are replying to is human. The
appropriate model is contact by letter rather than telephone or
face-to-face contact. There are no vocal or visual cues to help you
in conveying or understanding messages.

5. It is unwise to react quickly to a message, especially if it has
annoyed you.

6. Refer to the message to which you are replying, summarising it if
appropriate.

7. Be careful with humour and sarcasm - it doesn't always read the
way you intend it.

8. Don't overdo personalised signatures. These can soon grate on
readers.

9. Don't send attachments to the list. They take up lots of disk space, can
crash users' email systems and carry viruses.

WARNING!!

not responsible for advice given on the list.
