a little Comment
one of our own midwives (who established our complementary therapy clinic)
had her first baby last year and ended up caesarean section at term +17 for
failed induction. she had tried various complementary treatments and was
very disappointed not to have had a vaginal birth. she aims to achieve
vaginal birth next pregnancy and has commented on the effect that the words
"trial of labour" have on her now. she feels the phrase is very negative and
does not inspire her with great confident that she will manage. her comment
is she doesn't want to try she wants to achieve. it just made me reflect on
the power of language and how what we say can affect others.

Subject: Re: Study in to why women choose caesarean section
Dear Sue,
Three of us are doing a pilot study around VBACs, one part of which relates
to two focus groups to find out how women reached their decision to have an
elective repeat CSection for the current pregnancy (one group) or to have a
trial of labor or a vaginal birth, another group. (That title alone makes
me crazy, but that's another issue!). These will happen this spring,
porbably in March.
