These courses are very very good and well worth trying to get some
money to go, especially in year 1 and 2 of your phd or equivalent.

Subject: UK GRAD Programme
Dear Postgrad list. Please find below information from Dr Janet Metcalfe of the UK GRAD Programme. Those who have been to our conferences will have heard Janet speak about the importance of the GRAD programme (Formally the Research Councils Graduate School's Programme).
Please circulate this within your institution's postgrad networks. Personal recommendation is the most common reason someone decides to apply, so do recommend people to talk to past attendees. If you have been on a course then do add your personal view of the value of the courses.
Please also check that your institution has a link to the new UK GRAD website @ www.grad.ac.uk
FREE courses for postgraduate researchers!.Well, that is if you are funded by one of the research councils, AHRB or the Wellcome Trust and are in your second or third year.
We are now taking booking for our 2003 residential courses on-line:
http://www.grad.ac.uk/gradschool/servlets/student.CourseSearchServlet?mode=courseSearchForm
We used to be known as the Research Councils' Graduate Schools Programme, but are now the UK GRAD Programme and we have a whole new programme of courses. We have three, four and five day courses: some concentrating on career management skills, some with outdoor activities, others looking at techniques to improve your personal effectiveness, group working skills and professional development.
Talk to any student who has been on a course and they will tell you how valuable it can be.
If you are not funded by one of the above organisations, then you can still come on the national courses - if you can persuade someone to pay for you - or we may be running an equivalent course at your institution. Or you can visit our website (htttp://www.grad.ac.uk) for free: this is written by postgrads for postgrads and contains information, guidance and gateways to other relevant resources. Your contributions on how we can make it more useful for you are very welcome.
