Hi Jennifer
I wrote a piece about this in Practising Midwife in1998, as it seems to me
that the line follows/indicates the degree of cervical dilatation, reaching
its apex at the sacrococcygeal junction at full dilatation. There is also
anecdotal evidence that the colour change from red to purple occurs when the
cervix is fully effaced.
I am just preparing to start my PhD on this very thing and hope to reach a
definitive conclusion on its usefulness or not.
