INSTRUCTIONS TO PRESENTERS
· The abstract should not be more than 250 words (excluding the
particulars of the presenter).
· The language of conference will be mainly English but there will
be interpreters (English- Portuguese and Portuguese- English).
· All abstracts must be submitted in English but presenters can
choose to use either English or Portuguese for presentation
· Please prepare the abstracts in MS word format or Rich Text Format
(RTF)
· The deadline for submission of abstracts is August 15th , 2003

Conference theme: Enhancing ClientsRights and Quality of Care in
Reproductive and Sexual Health
Sub-theme 1: Women and childrens realities: vulnerability, violations and
violence
The presentations will:
· Describe the latest physical and mental health findings related to
risk factors for, effects of, and clinical and health services
prevention, identification, and response to violence;
· Highlight innovative research, practices, programs, and
partnerships between health management systems, providers, governments,
legal systems, social service agencies, and violence advocates that
protect and improve clients safety and health status;
· Emphasize prevention and intervention strategies relevant to
diverse cultures, races, classes, ethnicities, religions, physical
abilities, ages, genders, sexual identities, geographic settings and
communities; and
· Discuss the emerging and co-occurring issues, and responses
related to victims, children, perpetrators, and communities affected
by violence at local, national and international levels.
Sub-theme 2: Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS
The presentations will focus on:
· Youth and adolescents and HIV/AIDS/STIs;
· Mother to Child transmission of HIV and its prevention and control
including interventions against transmission through breast feeding;
· Gender and sexuality in HIV/AIDS/STIs;
· HIV/AIDS care and support
Sub-theme 3: Rights, responsibilities and choice in reproductive health
The presentations will focus on issues related to reproductive and sexual
health including:
· Barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health services;
· Mainstreaming gender issues in the health sector
· Pregnancy: choice and safety
· Adolescent sexual right
· Traditional practices affecting the health of women and children.
Sub-theme 4: Evidence-based reproductive and sexual health
Presentations will focus on the processes of:
· Pooling research results of clinical trials together in systematic
reviews and the benefits and l imitations of meta-analysis;
· Implementing of evidence-based and best practice in reproductive
health: Enhancers and barriers and strategies.
Sub-theme 5: Perinatal and child morbidity and mortality
The presentations will cover:
· Prevention and management of leading causes of maternal, neonatal
and pediatric morbidity and mortality (including anemia, malaria,
hemorrhage, sepsis, birth asphyxia and trauma, accidents, diarrhea
and other infectious diseases)
· Emergency obstetric care for miscarriages and other problems of
pregnancy, including severe pre-eclampsia, haemorrhage and obstructed
labour.
· Prevention and management of low birth weight and intrauterine
growth retardation;
· Maternal and child nutrition and the role of micronutrients in
healthy child bearing; and child and adolescent health and
development;
· Birth defects and genetic disorders;
· Reproductive health including socio-cultural -behavioral aspects,
birth practices, and evaluation of new contraceptives;
· Complimentary/traditional systems of health care practices that
have an impact on the health and wellbeing of women, children, and
adolescents;
